The Dogs discover that gamblers are bringing counterfeit money into the city from Port Caynn. Beka is a good role model.Beka Cooper is finally a Dog in the Provost's Guard. And all of the lesbians are really nice, helpful people. Lesbians: There are a few lesbians in this book, and I don't see why this is bad, but I thought to add it just in case you think it's bad, but I think most people will be okay. It's just some fistfights and other things that are to be expected of Beka since she is a Dog (the equivalent of a police officer).ĭrinking: On many nights, the characters in this book go to taverns and gambling houses and drink. But Beka puts a stop to the torturing, and is kind to him, and the man actually turns out to be innocent. They do whip the man, and give him 'the drink' (but we still don't really know what 'the drink' is). Basically, the author leaves readers guessing what the heck either of things actually are, so the torture's not very graphic. They mention some things called 'the rack' and 'the drink', and though there is a brief description of what 'the drink' does, it's not very clarifying. In one chapter, there is a description of them torturing a man, and mention of several different methods of torture. Violence: There is quite a bit of violence in this book, but none of it is super bad or graphic. However, the chemistry between the two is pretty intense. Many times during the book, Beka considers making love with him, but they don't actually.
Their relationship starts out as just flirting, but eventually they start kissing. Sexual Themes: In the book, two characters (Beka and Dale) fall in love. I've rated this book 12 and up for sexual themes and such, not for violence or anything else. I recommend this book for ages 12 and up, but a mature 10 or 11 year old could handle it. This is a really great book! I liked it better than the first one.
